Narayan short course 1920w

An introduction to additive manufacturing with a focus on ceramics

This course has been cancelled.

July 21, 2019—8:00 a.m.–Noon | Toronto Marriott Downtown Easton Centre Hotel | Toronto, Canada

Held in conjunction with GFMAT-2/Bio-4

Instructor:  Roger Narayan, professor, University of North Carolina and North Carolina State University

Course description

Additive manufacturing is a novel fabrication process for polymer, metal, and ceramic materials that involves layer-by-layer fabrication of a three-dimensional part through selective joining of materials. Additive manufacturing techniques such as fused deposition modeling, stereolithography, selective laser sintering, and bioprinting technologies, allow for innovative and complex part fabrication, client customization, rapid prototyping, and distributed manufacturing. This course will provide an introduction to additive manufacturing with a focus on ceramics.

Topics will include:

  • Introduction and principles
  • Advantages over traditional subtractive manufacturing processes
  • Materials
  • Techniques and equipment
  • Current and future applications
