Learn About the Applications of Ultrashort Laser Pulses

June 9, 2019—8:00 a.m.– Noon | Boston Park Plaza Hotel | Held in conjunction with ICG 2019, Boston, Mass.

Instructor: S.K. Sundaram, Alfred University, USA

This course is intended for glass, ceramic, and materials scientists and engineers who are interested in learning more about the applications of ultrashort laser pulses to study and process glasses, ceramics, and glass-ceramics. This is a half-day survey-level introductory course. Attendees are expected to have basic knowledge of physics and glass science.

Course Objective

This course will introduce fundamental science behind ultrashort laser pulse-glass interactions and how that can be used to produce novel structures in glasses, ceramics, and glass-ceramics for materials science with a special focus on ceramics and glass research. The presenter will provide an overview of generation and control of ultrashort pulses covering nano-, pico-, femto-, and attosecond timescales and how these pulses interact with oxide as well as nonoxide glasses. The presenter will also specify examples of various novel phenomena in glasses and fabrication of unique structures and features in glasses (e.g., gratings, waveguides) using ultrashort laser pulses.

On completion of this course, the participants will be able to:

  • Understand how ultrashort laser pulses interact with glasses
  • Explain how the interaction can be used to create novel structures and features
  • Apply the knowledge to glass research or manufacturing in their field of work
