January Webinar: “Bioceramics: additive manufacturing and nanoclays for biomaterials applications”

Hosted by the Bioceramics Division, this webinar will feature presentations from Professor Julian Jones (Imperial College London, Bioceramics Division Chair) and Professor Kalpana Katti (North Dakota State University,  Bioceramics Division Secretary. The presentations will discuss the properties of bioglass, inorganic/organic sol-gel hybrids and methods for 3D printing them and use and design of nanoclays in biomaterials applications.  


Dr. Julian R. Jones, professor of biomaterials, leads a research group on bioactive glasses and hybrids, particularly 3D scaffolds and therapeutic nanoparticles at Imperial College London. He has more than 150 articles (h index 50, more than 1000 cites pa), four patent applications, and has co-edited three biomaterials text books. He was elevated to Fellow of the Society for Glass Technology in 2018, ACerS Fellow in 2015, and was awarded an International Society for Ceramics in Medicine Excellence Award in 2016; the 2014 Vittorio Gottardi Award from the International Commission on Glass, and the Robert L. Coble Award (ACerS) in 2010.

Dr. Kalpana Katti, University Distinguished Professor, leads a research group focused on tissue engineering, cancer scaffolds, and biomimetics at North Dakota State University. Her group has pioneered novel engineered nanoclay based composites for bone tissue engineering and bone scaffolds that create a testbed prostate and breast cancer metastasis to bone. She leads the NDSU Center for Engineered Cancer Test-Beds and also the NSF EPSCoR Center for Cellular Biointerfaces in Science and Engineering. She has published more than 190 publications (h index=45). She is the elected Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, 2018; received most cited award from the journal Colloids and Interfaces, 2007; NSF CAREER award, 2001; Roon award from Federation of Coatings Technologies, 1999.
