On September 26, 2024, a Workshop on Interfaces in Advanced Ceramic Materials was held at the Institute of Materials iMATUS of the University of Santiago de Compostela, an event that brought together leading experts in materials science to discuss the latest advances in the field of advanced ceramic materials. The event was jointly organized by ACerS International Spain Chapter and iMATUS, with the aim of promoting scientific and technological collaboration in this key sector.

During the opening, Carmen Álvarez, director of iMATUS, highlighted the importance of the multidisciplinary approach that characterizes this institute. “At iMATUS we believe that collaboration between people is key to advancing knowledge. Our pillars are materials for health, for industry, and for the environment and new energies,” said Álvarez, highlighting the institute’s commitment to collaborative research.

Professor Francisco Guitián, coordinator of the technological and transfer unit to the productive sector of iMATUS, welcomed the attendees, inviting them to learn about the facilities and resources of the institution. His speech was followed by professor Arnaldo Moreno, chair of ACerS International Spain Chapter, who explained the reasons that led the Society to establish international chapters, and how since 2020, the Spain Chapter has been a vehicle for the dissemination and collaboration in materials science throughout the country. He encouraged the scientists and students present to join ACerS and participate in its initiatives.

The event continued with a program of high-level scientific presentations, where topics such as ceramic and silicon metasurfaces, piezoelectric materials, advanced MAX phases, bioglasses with antimicrobial capacity, and heterogeneous metal-ceramic catalysts, among others, were discussed. Researchers from renowned centers such as the Institute of Materials Science of Madrid (ICMM), the Center for Research in Nanomaterials and Nanotechnology (CINN), the Carlos III University of Madrid, and iMATUS itself shared the latest advances in their research areas.

This event is a clear example of the commitment of iMATUS and the American Ceramic Society to promoting scientific knowledge and technological innovation in the field of advanced materials.
