Computer-Aided Sustainable Cement Manufacturing and Materials: Modeling, Virtual Design and Optimization

Cement manufacturing is one of the largest and most energy- and carbon-intensive industries in the world. Approximately half of these carbon dioxide emissions are from the calcination of limestone, while the other half is produced by the burning of fossil fuels during the clinker production. Due to the complexity of the thermodynamics process and chemical reactions in the clinker kiln and cement hydration, full-scale experiment with trial-and-error is not efficient to find optimal solutions for cement production and mix design. Advances in computational modeling and artificial intelligence have led to the creation of the virtual design and optimization for cement and manufacturing process. The study presents a new computational framework to characterize and optimize the chemistry of cements and thermal energy of cement rotary kiln to achieve user-defined performance criteria for strength, material cost, energy consumption, and sustainability. Pareto optimization reveals the inherent tradeoff between multiple objectives such as modulus of elasticity, time of set, and carbon dioxide emissions. The study also investigates the rheological behavior of oilwell cement slurries and model the flow of fresh cement as non-Newtonian fluids under various conditions. The study provides a new pathway to optimally proportion raw materials and design cement kiln to reduce production cost, extend the life of a quarry, and reduce the energy consumption and carbon footprint of cement plants.


BIOGRAPHY

Chengcheng Tao, Assistant Professor, Purdue University

Dr. Chengcheng Tao is an assistant professor in the School of Construction Management Technology at Purdue University. Dr. Tao earned her Ph.D. degree in civil engineering from the University of Florida. Prior to joining Purdue, Dr. Tao worked as an ORISE postdoctoral research fellow at DOE National Energy Technology Laboratory.

Dr. Tao’s research interests include sustainable cementitious materials and manufacturing, rheology of fresh cement, computational mechanics of materials, and optimization and machine learning applications in materials. Dr. Tao has received support from federal, state, and private sources, including the NSF, ACI Foundation, USDOT, ACS-PRF, NASEM, INDOT, and IISG. She was selected as the Early-Career Research Fellow by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine – Gulf Research Program, and received the American Chemical Society – Petroleum Research Fund Doctoral New Investigator Award, and Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant Faculty Scholars Award.
