The ACerS journals team is proud to announce that Maziar Montazerian is now editor-in-chief (EIC) of the International Journal of Applied Glass Science (IJAGS).
Montazerian is assistant research professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University and managing director of the Center for Glass Research. His research spans fundamental and applied glass science, with particular emphasis on bioactive glasses, glass-ceramics, crystallization, structure–property relationships, and the design of glassy materials for a broad range of applications. His work has also recently explored data-driven and machine-learning approaches to the design, characterization, and optimization of glass-ceramics.
Montazerian has extensive editorial experience and currently serves as associate editor for both Journal of the American Ceramic Society and the International Journal of Applied Glass Science, as well as a member of the Editorial Review Board of the Journal of Tissue Engineering. He has authored or coauthored approximately 80 peer-reviewed publications, including articles in Progress in Materials Science, Acta Biomaterialia, Journal of the American Ceramic Society, and the International Journal of Applied Glass Science. He is a recipient of the 2026 Tadashi Kokubo Award from The American Ceramic Society and the 2025 Rustum and Della Roy Innovation in Materials Research Award from Penn State.
His career has included academic and research appointments at the Center for Research, Technology, and Education in Vitreous Materials at the Federal University of São Carlos, Brazil; the Northeast Laboratory for the Evaluation and Development of Biomaterials at the Federal University of Campina Grande, Brazil; and The Pennsylvania State University. He also brings experience in industrial ceramics research and development.
Montazerian joined The American Ceramic Society in 2021 and has been actively involved in the Glass & Optical Materials Division. He has helped organized various symposia for ACerS’ glass-focused meetings.
As EIC, Montazerian plans to further strengthen IJAGS as a leading international journal at the interface of fundamental glass science and technological applications. He seeks to maintain and build upon IJAGS’ strong position among the leading journals in ceramics and glass, while ensuring that scientific quality, relevance, and influence—not metrics alone—remain the primary drivers of the journal.
Alongside excellent fundamental glass science, he plans to expand the journal’s presence in rapidly developing areas such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, sustainability and decarbonization, biomedical glass, photonics, energy technologies, electronics, and advanced manufacturing.
Another priority for Montazerian is to provide authors with rigorous, constructive, and timely peer review while maintaining high scientific standards. He plans to work closely with ACerS, Wiley, the Glass & Optical Materials Division, the International Commission on Glass, and the broader international glass community to increase the visibility and impact of outstanding IJAGS publications and to strengthen the journal’s engagement with researchers worldwide.
Montazerian, along with the entire ACerS journals team, thank outgoing EIC Mario Affatigato for his leadership and dedication to the journal for the past 10 years. During Affatigato’s tenure, he increased the journal’s reputation, full text views, two-year citations, submissions, and worked to keep the publication time down while still providing high-quality reviews. We wish him well in his future endeavors and hope to continue building on the legacy he leaves behind.
