On Friday, June 26, the ACerS Eastern Tennessee Section visited StandardAero in Maryville, Tennessee, for a tour of its jet engine repair facility. This facility performs complete overhauls of jet engines. While primarily focused on metal components, StandardAero utilizes plasma spray technologies to deposit ceramic-based thermal barrier coatings such as stabilized zirconia, alumina and tungsten carbide. The most impressive part of the tour was seeing the company’s test facility. After completing a rebuild, the engines are tested to full power to ensure no leaks and that they achieve specified thrust. Each test takes approximately 500 gallons of fuel.
