The September 2025 issue of ACerS Bulletin is now available online.
In this month’s issue, we explore novel processing techniques and technologies for materials manufacturing. The first feature story by Nicolas Somers, Eren Özmen, and Mark D. Losego describes the development of a single-step ceramic additive manufacturing process that does not require post-process pyrolysis or high-power lasers. The second feature story by Keith J. DeCarlo and William M. Carty aims for a better understanding of dispersion mechanisms in nonaqueous suspension processing. The third feature story by Scott K. Robinson looks closely at the types of furnace solutions available to develop, process, and commercialize high-performance materials for hypersonic applications.
Two additional feature stories provide brief overviews of two more novel processing methods. The first one by Nicolas Albar, Thomas Hérisson de Beauvoir, and Claude Estournès models the sintering trajectory of zinc oxide during the cold sintering process. The second one by Scott Mittl teases a proprietary technique that allows internal threads to be machined directly into post-fired ceramic components.
In addition to the feature stories, the “Journal Highlights” column by ACerS journals managing editor Jonathon Foreman describes the different ways modeling is used to improve glass production. The “Deciphering the Discipline” column by student Kay Wojtowicz focuses on the characterization of ceramic materials of varying compositions created with direct ink writing.
This issue’s Industry section features three columns focused on various established and emerging manufacturing techniques and technologies. The “Business and Market View” column overviews the global market for laser systems, components, and materials. The “Industry Perspectives” column features an interview with NUTEC Group CEO Daniel Llaguno, who discusses the company’s history and its plans for the next 50 years of innovation in the thermal processing equipment market. The “Industry Insights” column by David Holthaus shows how materials businesses and researchers are exploring the commercial frontiers of space.
Finally, this issue contains the annual announcement of ACerS Awards of 2025. In addition to this year’s Distinguished Life Members—John E. Marra and Subhash H. Risbud—the Society will elevate 12 members to Fellow and recognize many more outstanding members with various Society, Division, and Class awards during the ACerS Annual Honor and Awards Banquet Reception on Sept. 29, 2025, in Columbus, Ohio.
