The August 2025 issue of ACerS Bulletin is now available online.
In this month’s issue, we explore novel energy solutions to power a safer future. The cover story by Wan Si Tang looks at what the Electrochemical Safety Research Institute is doing to advance the safer design and deployment of energy storage and energy generation technologies. Two additional feature stories dive into the nuclear energy market, with the first one by Nathaniel Marrero, Samuel Gross, and S. K. Sundaram investigating the potential of cermets as a nuclear waste form and the second one by Margareth Gagliardi overviewing trends in the nuclear fuel market.
Two application notes showcase novel energy research in other realms. The first application note by Weiwu Chen and Yoshinari Miyamoto describes a newly developed combustion synthesis process to produce cost-effective synthesis aluminum nitride powders for thermal and light management applications. The second application note by Seiichi Suda shows that the thermal properties of sericite-based compression seals are suitable for high-temperature gas sealing applications. This issue also contains the annual overview of the United States Geological Survey Mineral Commodity Summaries, which presents the main trends discussed in this year’s report.
In addition to the feature stories, the “Journal Highlights” column by ACerS journals managing editor Jonathon Foreman describes the design of ceramic electrochemical catalysts for advanced energy applications and environmental remediation. The “Deciphering the Discipline” column by student Hugh Smith looks at the potential of sodium-ion batteries as an alternative to lithium-ion batteries.
This issue’s Industry section features three columns focused on various aspects of the growing energy market. The “Business and Market View” column overviews the global market for renewable energy technologies. The “Industry Perspectives” column by James Marra provides a rundown of the nuclear energy market, which is experiencing increasing support globally. The “Industry Insights” column by David Holthaus describes how the surging demand for energy brings both threats and opportunities.
Finally, ACerS member B. Venkata Manoj Kumar contributed a summary of the “Ceramics for Sustainable Society” roundtable discussion that took place during the 4th Global Ceramic Leadership Roundtable in March 2024.
