ACerS is pleased to announce Dong (Lilly) Liu has been selected for Volunteer Spotlight, a program that recognizes a member who demonstrates outstanding service to The American Ceramic Society through volunteerism.
Liu is associate professor of engineering science and Tutorial Fellow in Trinity College at the University of Oxford. She is also head of the Experimental Mechanics of Advanced Materials group and deputy director of the Rolls-Royce University Technology Center of Solid Mechanics. Liu received her Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the University of Bristol. After graduation, she served as a Research Fellow at the University of Oxford and then associate professor at the University of Bristol before returning to Oxford in 2024.
Liu’s research focuses on advanced ceramics and alloys in nuclear fission, fusion, aerospace, and the power electronics and radio frequency areas. By developing multiple length-scale approaches combined with cutting-edge novel experimental techniques, her group investigates the deformation and fracture of those materials under extreme service conditions—such as extreme temperatures as well as neutron and ion radiation—to underpin their safe applications and to enable innovative materials designs. Besides research, Liu serves on several international technical committees, including the FAA Composite Materials Handbook Standards (CMH-17) Ceramic Matrix Testing Working Group and the IOM3 Ceramic Science Committee.
Liu is actively involved in ACerS, currently serving as secretary of the Engineering Ceramics Division, leading chair of the ACerS International United Kingdom Chapter, chair of the Awards Committee, and chair of the Registration Waiver and Travel Grant Program. She has led and co-led the organization of many symposia at various ACerS conferences over the past five-plus years. Recently, she served as organizing chair and on the International Advisory Board for the HTCMC conference in June 2026. She has been awarded the Global Jubilee Excellence Award and Global Ambassador Award for her research achievements and contributions to the international ceramics community.
We extend our deep appreciation to Liu for her service to our Society!
