Julie MacPherson, a research fellow at the University of Warwick (U.K.) explains the workings of an atomic force microscope and how the use of a nanotube-enabled AFM unlocks the structure and contours of materials on the nanoscale.
MacPherson and a team at the university are working on ways to use nanomaterials to drive down the costs of doing material measurements and allowing the work to be done in bulk. She also explains the role of lasers to record the actual measurements as the AFM nanoprobe tracks the structure of the materials. |
