The Hydrogen Journal reported that Wallenius Lines of Sweden plans to test the first solid oxide fuel cell in a marine environment. The company will begin with a test that will use a 20kW fuel cell. The plan is to follow up the test with a 250 kW fuel cell, which is large enough to generate half of the vessel’s electricity demand when in port.

Wallenius has a long-term strategy to develop a vessel which is completely emissions free. Hydrogen to power the fuel cell will be generated onboard by reforming either methanol, liquified natural gas or biogas.

The fuel cell is being provided by Wartsila, also one of the world’s largest marine engine suppliers. Wartsila is chairing an European Union project to develop a marine fuel cell which can run on biofuels.
