Regardless of your specialization, be it energy or medical or refractories, you’ve doubtless met with blank stares or questions about pottery when you say you work with ceramics.

Ceramics and glass are in many ways a hidden industry—many people do not realize these materials are essential to numerous advanced technologies, from smartphones and 5G to airplanes and cars. And part of the reason for this obscurity is because people have never talked to a ceramic or glass scientist or engineer.

Unlike police officers and firefighters, ceramic and glass scientists are not common guests at school career fairs. So many people do not know this branch of materials science is even a career possibility until they get to college—and likely still don’t if they do not major in materials science.

Ceramic and glass scientists and engineers are all around us, though—and now is your chance to meet them.

Ceramic Tech Chat is a new monthly podcast by The American Ceramic Society that gives you a chance to meet ceramic and glass scientists and engineers whose work makes a big impact in today’s world.

Our chats with ACerS members give us a look into their unique and personal stories of how they found their way to careers in ceramics or glass and learn what they discovered personally, professionally, and scientifically along the way.

Ceramic Tech Chat premieres on May 13, 2020, and will publish on the second Wednesday of every month. The first season will consist of five episodes and will feature ACerS members from a variety of fields, including ultrahigh-temperature ceramics, refractories, phase modeling, and more.

Join us each month to meet some of the scientists and engineers who drive this hidden industry!
