I just received belated word that J. Walter Szymaszek died. Actually, he passed away in January and there is a just-posted obituary about him on the ACerS site.

Szymaszek received a Bronze medal and citation for his work on the Manhattan Project, and later moved on to the the ceramic and metallurgy department of the GE Research and Development Center.

He had a hand in a lot of projects, but he may be best known for helping invent and patent an iconic piece of photography equipment that was ubiquitous in the 1970s, the GE Flipflash, that at the time revolutionized flash photography for amateurs.
