Despite a gloomy forecast, my friends and I enjoyed three days of sunshine this past weekend in Ohio to kickoff the unofficial start of summer.
With summer comes the opportunity to participate in much-anticipated warm weather activities, such as swimming, camping, and cookouts. And while breaking out the old grill may be your way of preparing for the season, others like to purchase new items to celebrate this time as a fresh start.
In anticipation of summer shopping, writers at Wirecutter, the product recommendation service from The New York Times, recently published a list of the best drinking glasses of 2024. They based this selection on four criteria: form and function, color authenticity, durability, and stackability.
While some plastic cups were included, most recommendations were made of actual glass. Of the colored glass options on the list, all were inherently colored rather than coated because coatings are less durable and can begin to look cruddy quite quickly, the writers explained.
The writers went a step further by including a chart showing the pros and cons of five types of glass: soda-lime, tempered, borosilicate, ion-exchange, and nonleaded crystal. They spoke with experts to elucidate the science behind these glasses, including ACerS Fellow William LaCourse, retired professor of glass science at the Inamori School of Engineering at Alfred University.
Ultimately, the wide range in size, weight, design, and price included on the list means “you can find the best glasses for your lifestyle and budget,” the writers conclude.
View the list here, and enjoy your summer outings in style!
