Dr. Arvind Agarwal is a Distinguished University Professor and Chair of the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at Florida International University (FIU), Miami. He also serves as the Director of the Advanced Materials Engineering Research Institute (AMERI). Prof. Agarwal obtained his Bachelor’s degree from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur in Materials and Metallurgical Engineering and Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville.

Prof. Agarwal has published more than 260 peer-reviewed journal articles, 3 co-authored books, 7 edited books, and 7 U.S. patents. His primary areas of research are advanced materials processing and mechanical properties at a small scale. He has worked extensively in ceramic nanocomposite coatings, including bioceramics and ultrahigh temperature ceramics using thermal spray and spark plasma sintering.  Prof. Agarwal is an elected Fellow of ASM International and a Senior Member of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI). His other honors include National Science Foundation’s (NSF) CAREER award, Defense Tech Connect Award, and Nanomaterials and Energy Prize. Also, he is a recipient of the FIU President’s Council Outstanding Professor.

Prof. Agarwal is a member of the Engineering Ceramics Division. His most significant service emerges as founding Faculty Advisor of a Materials Advantage Chapter at FIU. He has trained many students in Ceramics, who were a part of ACerS President’s Council of Student Advisors (PCSA), and now leaders in ceramics pursuing active careers in research, industry, and academia. Currently, Prof. Agarwal is working on advancing UHTC research by creating unique structures, including foams and 3D printed geometries. He is also working on a pipeline of students to be trained in ceramics for national needs.
