Day is Curators’ Professor Emeritus of Materials Science and Engineering and Senior Investigator (formerly Director) of the Graduate Center for Materials Research at the Missouri University of Science and Technology and the former chairman and president of MO-SCI Corporation. His research interests include glasses for biomedical applications, the containerless processing of glass in microgravity, the vitrification of nuclear waste, and the structure and properties of mixed alkali glasses. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, a Fellow, past President and Distinguished Life Member of The American Ceramic Society and received the internationally recognized Phoenix Award for his technical achievements and contributions to the glass industry. He has published some 400 technical papers and been awarded 66 US and foreign patents.
