At just seven years old, Jessica Sly asked for a microscope for Christmas and was adamant about growing up to become a scientist. In 2018, she moved from her hometown of Kuna, Idaho to begin studying materials science and engineering at Washington State University. During her first semester, Jessica connected with Dr. John McCloy and the Nuclear, Optical, Magnetic, and Electronic research group where she fell in love with glass science. Her research projects primarily focused on applications of glass in nuclear waste cleanup through which she gained critical laboratory skills to carry forward into graduate school. Now, she has the incredible opportunity to pursue a PhD at Penn State University in the Mauro group where she will continue her work in the field of glass science. Outside of the lab Jessica enjoys running, hiking, cooking, and spending time with her family.
