Dr. Jianhua Tong is an associate professor of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Clemson University, Clemson, South Carolina, USA.

In 2002, Dr. Tong earned his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Science. After graduation, Dr. Tong significantly expanded his research experiences while working as a researcher, JSPS Fellow, and postdoc scholar at the prestigious institutions of Research Institute of Innovative Technology for the Earth, National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, University of Cincinnati, and California Institute of Technology. In 2008, he became a research faculty at the Colorado School of Mines and worked as research assistant/associate professors for about seven years. Since 2016, Dr. Tong started to work as an associate professor at Clemson University. He is an active member of several professional societies such as ACerS, MRS, ISSI, NACS, and AAAS.

Dr. Tong’s research focuses on solid state ionic (SSI) materials and devices. His interests include the creation, synthesis, and characterization of SSI materials (e.g. perovskite, Ruddlesden Popper, mayenite, and nanoionics) and the design, fabrication, and demonstration of SSI devices (e.g. catalytic membrane reactors, fuel/electrolysis cells, and thermochemical particle reactors). The processing techniques include on 3D printing of ceramics, laser sintering/synthesis, solid state reactive sintering, and polymeric chelating, etc. The applications include natural gas conversion to value-added chemicals, direct solar fuels (e.g. hydrogen and hydrocarbons) production, sustainable ammonia synthesis, and effective carbon dioxide reduction, etc. He has published >60 peer-reviewed papers and 6 book chapters and filed 15 patents. His publications have been cited >3300 times, and his H-index is >28. He is also an active reviewer for >40 journals and multiple funding agencies.
