John L. Provis is Professor of Cement Materials Science and Engineering, and Head of the Engineering Graduate School, at the University of Sheffield, Sheffield, UK. He holds BE(Hons)/BSc (2002) and PhD (2006) degrees from the University of Melbourne, Australia, and has held his current position in Sheffield since 2012. He has been awarded an Australian Research Council Discovery Outstanding Researcher Award (2012), the RILEM Robert L’Hermite Medal (2013), and an honorary Doctorate (Dr.h.c.) from Hasselt University, Belgium (2015). He is a Fellow of IoM3 and ICT, a TAC Expert and Technical Committee Chair for RILEM, a Specialty Chief Editor for Frontiers in Materials, and Associate Editor of the journals Cement and Concrete Research and Materials and Structures. He has published over 200 refereed international journal articles related to the development, characterization and application of innovative cementitious materials, particularly alkali-activated cements.

His research results have been applied in both construction and nuclear waste immobilization, leading to improvements in the use and understanding of cements and their durability. His work has been funded by the European Union including an ERC Starting Grant, by national funding agencies in the UK and Australia, and through extensive industrial collaborations. He is a member of the Cements Division and the UK Chapter of ACerS.
