Michael J. Hoffmann is professor for ceramic materials and systems in the Institute for Applied Materials at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Germany. He earned his diploma in technical mineralogy from the Technical University of Darmstadt (1985) and his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Stuttgart, Germany (1989). Before he joined KIT as a professor, he was a senior researcher at the Max-Planck-Institut für Metallforschung in Stuttgart from 1985-95.

Hoffmann has recognized expertise in the areas of sintering and microstructural evolution of engineering and functional ceramics; ceramic processing; mechanical behaviour of brittle materials; defect chemistry in perovskites; ferroelectric ceramics; and materials for electrochemical storage and conversion. He received the Masing-Gedächnispreis from Deutsche Gesellschaft für Materialkunde (1993), the Dionýz Ilkovič Memorial Medal of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (2003), and the Hsun Lee lecture award from the Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Science (2008), an honorary doctorate from the Slovak Academy of Sciences (2011), and the Pioneer award from the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Materialkunde (2015).

Hoffmann is an academician in the World Academy of Ceramics and Fellow of The American Ceramic Society. He has organized numerous international conferences and workshops, has served as a member of ACerS meeting committee, nominating committee, Ross Coffin Purdy award committee and as ACerS Director. He published over 300 technical papers and holds several patents. Hoffmann is a member of ACerS Basic Science Division and Engineering Ceramics Division.
