Roger Narayan

Roger J. Narayan is a Professor in the Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of North Carolina and North Carolina State University. He received an M.D. from the School of Medicine at Wake Forest University in 2001 and a Ph.D. from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at North Carolina State University in 2002. 

Dr. Narayan has made contributions to the fields of (a) laser processing of ceramics and (b) laser-based additive manufacturing of ceramics; these methods are particularly useful for preparing biomedical materials with unique structures and improved functionalities. He is an author of over one hundred publications as well as several book chapters on processing, characterization, and modeling of biomedical materials. Dr. Narayan has edited several books, including the textbook Biomedical Materials and the handbook Materials for Medical Devices.

Dr. Narayan has received numerous prestigious awards, including the Fulbright-Brazil Scientific Mobility Program at the University of Sao Paulo (2014), the NCSU Certificate of Reflective Teaching (2014), the ACerS Robert L. Coble Award (2012), the ACerS Richard M. Fulrath Award (2011), the NSF Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award (2006), the Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award (2005), and the TMS Young Leader Award (2004). In addition, he has been elected Fellow of the American Institute for Medical & Biological Engineering (2012), ASM International (2009), and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) (2007).
