Dr. Sanjay Sampath, is Distinguished Professor of Materials Science at Stony Brook University (State University of New York) and Director of the Center for Thermal Spray Research (www.stonybrook.edu/ctsr)  an interdisciplinary industry-university collaborative research center in field of thermal spray processing and coatings.  Sampath received his Ph.D. from Stony Brook in 1989 following which he spent four years at GTE Sylvania involved in research and development of refractory materials.  He returned to Stony Brook in 1993 as a faculty member where he was a key participant in establishing the NSF Materials Research Science and Engineering Center leading a dozen interdisciplinary faculty towards fundamental understanding of thermal spray processes, materials and applications.  The self-sustaining Center is home to the Industrial Consortium for Thermal Spray Technology comprising of 35 leading companies aimed at knowledge transfer from fundamental research to application engineering.   He was also principal investigator on a major DARPA grant aimed at developing new 3D processing tools for maskless direct writing of mesoscale electronics and sensors.

Sampath has over 300 publications to his credit, 15 patents and several best paper awards.  He was advisor to  30 PhD students and equal number of Master’s students and mentored over 25 post-doctoral fellows.  He is currently associate editor of the Journal of American Ceramic Society. He is a recipient of several honors including SUNY Chancellor’s Award for excellence in scholarship, elevated to SUNY Distinguished Professor in 2011, elected Fellow of ASM and ACerS and received the R&D 100 award for development and commercialization of direct write thermal spray technology. In 2015 he received the ASM International Thermal Spray Hall-of-Fame recognition and in 2017 he received the TMS (The Materials Society)  Application to Practice award.
