Quantum processes in glasses encompass quite a wide range. For example, large quantum fluctuations serve to inhibit glass formation as tunneling and zero-point energy allow particles to traverse barriers, facilitating movement. Quantum efficiency and energy transfer processes in rare-earth-doped glasses show strong compositional dependence. Quantum-doped glasses unravel nonlinear optical processes.
